Studypool is an online learning platform that gives students 24/7 access to learning help. The education system had to go through a long due overhaul due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The future of EdTech in developed and developing countries is promising, says Troy Portillo. EdTech has been critical in allowing students to continue studying despite the school lockdowns, and it has also opened new avenues for providing education on a large scale. Technology is required but not sufficient for successful remote learning.
Ishan Pandey: Hi Troy Portillo, welcome to our series “Behind the Startup.” Please tell us about yourself and the story behind Studypool.com?
Troy Portillo: Studypool is an online learning platform. Our mission is to democratize learning and give students access to study resources. I’m Troy, head of growth. Due to covid-19, the world has changed, and the education system had to go through a long due overhaul. With classes moving online, many students are facing problems with studying on their own, and the attention span for students in online classes is lower than ever. We at Studypool are trying to solve the issues that students face worldwide by providing a one-stop solution for study help.
Ishan Pandey: According to you, how are EdTech platforms making education easy for students?
Troy Portillo: Currently, students from lower-income backgrounds in the US and worldwide are finding it extremely difficult to cope with the curriculum at schools and universities. Edtech platforms like Studypool make learning easier for students by giving them 24/7 access to learning help, which is not possible in the physical world.
Even today, more than 2 years into the pandemic, education administrators must weigh the health concerns associated with in-person learning against the educational needs of students. Due to this, students must have the proper resources to prepare for the future during these ongoing uncertain times.
Ishan Pandey: How has the pandemic changed the EdTech and education market?
Troy Portillo: The pandemic forced the entire education industry to shift more online, which was certainly an opportunity for many EdTech players to gain new users. For Studypool, it just emphasized that our platform is more relevant than ever as students adapting to remote learning need more study support than ever before.
It is critical to note that 1.6 billion students have been afflicted by the COVID-19 epidemic, interrupting schooling in more than 150 nations. Many nations responded by implementing some type of distance education. As an emergency reaction, the education response during COVID-19’s early stages concentrated on adopting remote learning methods. These were meant to accomodate all pupils, but they didn’t always work. Education responses have therefore changed in step with the pandemic.
The full scope of the pandemic’s short-, medium-, and long-term effects are still being assessed.
Technology is required but not sufficient for successful remote learning, EdTech has been critical in allowing students to continue studying despite the school lockdowns, and it has also opened new avenues for providing education on a large scale.
Remote learning must allow for meaningful two-way contact between students and their instructors in order for it to be effective. Such interactions may be accomplished by employing the most suitable technology for the local environment.
Ishan Pandey: What is the future of EdTech in developed and developing countries?
Troy Portillo: Great EdTech ideas can emerge from anywhere and education itself is something all people and cultures seek, so the future for the EdTech landscape is promising and expected to grow no matter what. Hundreds of millions of students worldwide were able to continue their education during the Covid-19 pandemic because of EdTech.
Despite the fact that constraints in many areas of the globe have lessened, the progress gained in digitizing education will continue to be necessary. Many governments throughout the globe may build on this digital basis to develop a true 21st-century education system that combines conventional teaching approaches with technological tools that have arisen in the previous two years.
EdTech allows instructors to provide individualized instruction so that all students may study at their own speed, whenever and wherever they choose. Using effective learning approaches such as entertaining videos, exercises, and games, students may better absorb challenging subjects.
